Matrix is an open standard for interoperable, decentralized, real-time communication. It allows you
to chat across different providers (like email) without being locked into a single platform.
Active Matrix Rooms crawls the Matrix federation to
discover public rooms and measure their real-time activity by counting messages only.
๐ Privacy
We count messages to calculate activity rates. We do not read,
store, or index message content โ only the number of messages in a time window.
๐ Activity Calculation
Every room is periodically checked by counting recent messages and calculating a
messages per hour rate. Message text is never read or stored โ only the count.
This rate is smoothed over time to filter out spikes. Rooms are ranked primarily
by this activity rate, with member count as a tie-breaker.
๐ Room Discovery
The system automatically crawls known Matrix servers every 5 minutes, viewing their
public room directories respectfully. New servers are discovered from room metadata.
โ Missing a Room or Server?
Use the Add field in the header to manually add anything the crawler hasn't found
yet. You can enter:
#room-name:server.org โ a room alias
!roomid:server.org โ a room ID
server.org โ a server domain (scrapes all its public rooms)
A matrix.to link โ auto-detected and resolved
Batch Add
Paste up to 100 rooms, aliases, or servers โ one per line.
